In order to aid farmers in poor countries, Tate and Lyle, the largest sugar cane refiner in Europe, decided to switch to Fairtrade certified sugar supplies in Britain. The company plans to complete the move to Fairtrade by 2009. Tate and Lyle is the largest company of any major UK food or drink brands to switch to Fairtrade sourcing. The company hopes to sell ten times more sugar than current sales.
